The 9163 digital indicator covers a wide range of applications in which measured values need to be recorded, displayed, evaluated and forwarded to higher-level control systems. Examples include the determination of geometric variables in production, for example by differential measurement, or the examination of material properties in the laboratory.
The measured values can be transferred via PROFIBUS, RS232 or analogue output.
The multi-channel capability allows the connection of up to four sensors and their linking via mathematical functions. This means that even complicated measurement tasks are possible with just one device.
The output of visual alarm messages on the display makes the evaluation of limit values easier and more convenient. The up to four outputs are relay or logic outputs with configurable functions.
The low error of measurement of 0.1% also fulfils higher accuracy requirements. Various functions, such as reset or HOLD, can be controlled via 2 digital inputs.
The digital indicator supports the direct connection of strain gauges, potentiometric sensors, transmitters with process value output, Pt100 and thermocouples. Manual linearisation makes it possible to enter a wide range of sensor characteristics.
State-of-the-art microprocessor technology makes it possible to design a high level of technology in the smallest possible space. Essential device settings can be made using the 6-button keypad. Fixed settings, such as the choice of excitation voltage, are made via jumpers. The large, 13 mm high 7-segment display allows a good visualisation of the measured values and menu parameters.
The integrated supply voltage source supplies the sensors and provides the auxiliary power for the connectable transmitters. The manual linearisation allows non-linear sensor characteristics to be entered with 32 interpolation points.
The indicator also supports memory functions for min, max and peak-to-peak values. The high measuring rate of 500 measured values/s also allows the 4 integrated limit value relays to react quickly. Transistor switches can also be retrofitted as an option. Device settings are possible either via the keypad or the optional RS232, RS485 or PROFIBUS interface. Integration into the PROFIBUS is carried out as standard via the GSD file supplied.
Powerful software for evaluation and logging is available on request in conjunction with the RS232 and RS485 option.
Application Examples
Differential measurement of geometric values in production and the laboratory

SOLUTION
As part of the quality assurance process, the shaft is tested for true running, bow and concentricity of the bearing surfaces. The test also includes measuring the diameter of the shaft bearings. In the test, the shaft is clamped in a holder and turned by a motor while being measured by two displacement sensors. The instrument measures the difference between the signals from these two sensors; this difference is only allowed to vary within a specified tolerance band. The SENSORMASTER 9163 performs the difference calculation and assesses the results. As this process takes just a few seconds, both random sampling and 100% testing are possible. If the shaft does not lie within the tolerance band, the SENSORMASTER 9163 outputs an alarm signal.
Testing for flatness on a workpiece

TASK
The flatness of a workpiece needs to be measured. To do this, measurements must be taken at three points to determine whether the workpiece is within tolerance. The results from these measurement points are compared using an electronic analysis unit. If the workpiece surface is found to be out of tolerance, the unit must immediately indicate the point at which the maxima have been exceeded. In addition, a visual display is required to make it easier to identify such workpieces.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT
High sampling rate, high-speed switching of limits.
SOLUTION
burster displacement transducers are used at the three measurement points. All displacement transducers from the burster range are suitable for use here. A SENSORMASTER 9163, with two main inputs, performs the analysis. The unit uses the two mathematical functions "Fin.A" and "Fin.B" to determine the mean values. To do this, the user assigns each of the inputs and the function "Fin.B" to a limit switch. These switches are configured as a direct-switching, symmetric alarm with hysteresis for minimum and maximum values. The process-value display can be configured to show a change in display colour as soon as one of the limit switches is active. In this case, the limit indicators show which measurement value is out of tolerance. Using the RS232 option with the 9163-P100 measurement data software, a PC can be employed to log and archive the measurements. This process can be automated by the controller communication tool included in the software.
