Makha Bucha Day is observed on the full moon day of the third lunar month (or the fourth lunar month in years with an intercalary eighth month). It is regarded as a major Buddhist holy day. The day commemorates the full moon of Magha, when 1,250 Arahant monks gathered spontaneously, without prior arrangement. This extraordinary event is known as the Caturanga Sannipata, and it was on this occasion that the Buddha delivered the Ovada Patimokkha.
